There’s an unlikely mentor tucked inside the pages of Narnia — Trufflehunter the Badger.

When danger rises, he says quietly,

“I feel safest when underground.”

At a glance, it sounds like cowardice.

But that’s because we misread wisdom as weakness.

The badger isn’t hiding.

He’s returning to the place that preserves him.

He’s going to ground

to the sett, the refuge that has kept generations before him alive.

Men have forgotten how to do this.

We push.

We grind.

We ignore the warning signs until our souls are frayed and our spirits are brittle. Then we wonder why collapse feels always around the corner.

But Scripture calls out the foolishness in that:

“The prudent see danger and take refuge,

but the simple keep going and pay the penalty."

Proverbs 22:3

The prudent man

Hebrew: עָרוּם (arum)

is the one who is sharpened, aware, alert.

He sees the storm forming before it hits.

He recognises the enemy’s pattern. He senses the Holy Spirit tug that says:

Stop

Slow

Rethink.

But the simple man keeps charging forward until something breaks.

Wisdom is not passivity.

Wisdom is precision.

Wisdom is courage that pays attention.

And this is where the badger speaks prophetically to us.

The Sett & The Cave: God’s Pattern for Men in Transition

Every badger has its sett the underground network passed down through generations.

It is a place of

refuge

renewal,

reorientation.

A badger is not at home above ground; it’s exposed there. Its truest strength is forged in the hidden place.

For the men of Cavetime NI,

this connects straight into our calling:

the Cave of Adullam.

When David fled from Saul, he didn’t run to a palace.

He didn’t run to a battlefield.

He ran to a cave.

“David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam.”

1 Samuel 22:1

Adullam became the sett for a generation of broken, angry, indebted, and disillusioned men the kind of men who normally become problems to society.

But under the anointing of God and the leadership of a man shaped in hidden places, they were transformed into mighty men.

David’s cave was the original Cavetime.

A place where God:

stripped away false identities,

rebuilt broken spirits,

trained warriors,

forged brotherhood

and

prepared men for future thrones and future battles.

The cave was not the end of their story.

It was the reset, the retrain, the re-emerge point.

Just like the badger’s sett.

Why Men Need a Sett

Now More Than Ever

Modern men have been discipled by noise.

By pressure.

By endless expectations and endless performance.

We’ve learned to live above ground, exposed, busy, and spiritually brittle.

But God hasn’t changed His pattern.

When He wants to grow a man, He draws him into a cave — a sett — a place where the world becomes quiet and Heaven becomes loud.

The cave is where:

●your soul stops pretending,

●your heart starts listening,

●your pride gets broken,

●your calling gets sharpened,

●your spirit regains its edge.

It’s the place where God pulls you away not to weaken you — but to build you from the inside out.

Badgers don’t apologise for going to ground.

Neither should you.

“Wisdom Is the Courage to See Things as They Really Are.”

Ignoring reality isn’t faith; it’s foolishness.

Pretending you’re fine when your marriage is strained isn’t faith.

Running ahead when the Holy Spirit is whispering “Pause” isn’t faith.

Overcommitting when your soul is dry isn’t faith.

It’s pride.

And pride blinds.

But wisdom?

Wisdom is the courage to slow down long enough to see clearly — to evaluate honestly — to hear God without the background hum of chaos.

Adullam is where you learn that skill.

The sett is where discernment matures.

The Badger’s Ancient Wisdom

The wisdom of the badger isn’t a new idea — it’s ancient.

Passed down through generations.

Instinctive

Tested

Proven.

Badgers survive because they honour their design.

Men thrive when they do the same.

God built into every man the need for hidden seasons, sober reflection, silence, brotherhood, and the patient work of the Spirit.

These are not weaknesses. These are survival skills.

The settlers of Adullam didn’t stay in the cave forever — but they couldn’t skip it either.

They emerged as warriors, kings, captains, and kingdom-shakers because they let God shape them in secret first.

Your Cave Moment

So here’s the blunt question — the one you can’t dodge:

Where is God inviting you to stop, go to ground, and regain clarity before damage comes?

Where is He calling you to pause before you push into a wall?

Where is He saying, “Come away with Me… before this gets worse”?

What danger on the horizon is your spirit already sensing?

Men who refuse the cave end up broken.

Men who embrace it rise sharpened.

Enter your sett.

Step into your Adullam.

Let God reset you.

Let Him retrain you.

Then re-emerge ready.

The world doesn’t need more reckless men.

It needs wise warriors — men who know when to advance and when to retreat into God.

Badger wisdom is warrior wisdom.

Adullam wisdom.
