Can These Bones Live?
When God Calls Dead Men to Stand
"The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones."
Ezekiel 37:1
There are moments in life when we stand in places where hope appears to have died.
View in your mindseye a marriage has grown cold or a calling has been abandoned, see a church that has lost its fire. It could be a nation has forgotten its God or you, a man still breathing, yet the warrior within you has long since fallen silent.
It is into such a scene that God leads Ezekiel.
Not to a flourishing vineyard.
Not to a city alive with worship.
But to a valley littered with bones.
Not wounded men.
Not dying men.
Dead men 💀.
And then God asks one of the most searching questions in all of Scripture:
"Son of man, can these bones live?"
Every visible piece of evidence points to one answer.
No!
The bones are not merely dry; Ezekiel says they are very dry. They have lain exposed for so long that every trace of life has vanished. In the ancient world, an unburied battlefield represented utter shame and complete defeat. These are not simply skeletons. They are the remains of an army whose story appeared to be over.
Yet Ezekiel refuses to answer according to what his eyes can see.
"O Sovereign LORD, You know."
Faith does not deny reality.
Faith simply recognises that God's power is greater than reality.
Israel's Story... and Ours
God leaves no doubt about the primary meaning of the vision.
"These bones are the whole house of Israel."
Jerusalem has fallen.
The Temple has been destroyed.
The people have been carried into exile.
They cry,
"Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone."
Israel believes the covenant has reached its grave.
God declares otherwise.
This vision is first and foremost a promise that exile will not have the final word. The covenant remains. The Shepherd has not abandoned His flock. The God who scattered His people also promises to gather them again.
Yet the beauty of Ezekiel's vision is that it refuses to stay confined to history. Throughout Scripture its echoes grow louder. The God who restores Israel is the God who breathes life into Adam, raises Lazarus from the tomb, pours out His Spirit at Pentecost, and promises the resurrection of His people.
Where God is present, death never has the final word.
The Miracle Happens in Stages
Most people remember the ending.
Few notice the process.
First the bones come together.
Then tendons.
Then muscles.
Then skin.
The bodies appear complete.
Yet they remain utterly lifeless.
This is one of the most sobering moments in the entire chapter.
Everything looks alive...
but nothing lives.
How many churches resemble these bodies?
How many ministries?
How many Christian men?
Busy.
Organised.
Disciplined.
Successful.
Respectable.
Yet lacking the life of God.
Structure without Spirit is still death.
Activity without God's presence is still emptiness.
Religion can assemble bones.
Only God gives life.
The Breath of God
God then commands Ezekiel to prophesy to the ruach.
This magnificent Hebrew word carries three meanings simultaneously:
- Wind.
- Breath.
- Spirit.
That is no accident.
It reaches all the way back to Genesis, where Adam's body lay perfectly formed until God breathed into him the breath of life.
The valley is not simply about restoration.
It is about new creation.
The same God who formed mankind from the dust now recreates an army from a valley of death.
This is what the Spirit of God does.
He does not improve dead men.
He makes dead men live.
The Prophet Never Performs the Miracle
There is another lesson every servant of God must learn.
Ezekiel never raises a single bone.
He simply speaks the Word God has given him.
God alone provides the life.
How often do we exhaust ourselves trying to change people?
We cannot resurrect marriages.
We cannot resurrect churches.
We cannot resurrect sons.
We cannot resurrect nations.
We cannot even resurrect ourselves.
Our responsibility is obedience.
God's responsibility is resurrection.
The prophet proclaims.
The Spirit transforms.
There Is Noise Before There Is Life
One detail often overlooked is the sound.
"There was a noise, a rattling..."
Restoration is rarely quiet.
Bones collide.
Everything appears chaotic.
Before God establishes order, He often exposes disorder.
Before healing comes, hidden wounds are uncovered.
Before revival comes, complacency is shaken.
Do not mistake the noise for failure.
Sometimes God is rearranging what has been scattered for generations.
Then Comes the Army
The miracle reaches its climax.
"They came to life and stood on their feet—a vast army."
Notice what God raises.
Not spectators.
Not consumers.
An army! 🛡
God has never been interested in producing comfortable men.
He is raising holy men.
Courageous men.
Disciplined men.
Men who stand when others fall.
Men whose lives testify that the Spirit of God still breathes life into those the world has written off.
The Second Sign
Many stop reading after the bones stand.
God does not.
He immediately commands Ezekiel to join two sticks into one.
The miracle is not merely about life.
It is about unity.
God restores people so they can walk together under one Shepherd and one King.
Restoration always moves towards covenant.
Towards community.
Towards worship.
Towards His Kingdom.
The Valley Is Not Your Home
Perhaps you recognise yourself in this vision.
Maybe you once burned with passion for Christ.
Maybe compromise, disappointment, grief or years of spiritual neglect have left your soul dry.
Hear this clearly.
God does not ask dead bones to make themselves live.
He commands them to hear His Word.
The same God who spoke into Ezekiel's valley still speaks today.
The question is no longer, "Can these bones live?"
Scripture has already answered that.
The question is this:
Will you continue lying among the bones, or will you stand when the Spirit of God calls?
Every man eventually chooses one of two valleys.
One is the valley where dry bones remain scattered, accepting defeat as destiny.
The other is the valley where dead men hear the voice of God, receive His Spirit, rise to their feet, and become the army they were always created to be.
Brother, the world does not need more men who merely attend church.
It needs men who have been breathed upon by the Spirit of the living God.
Men who show up.
Men who worship.
Men who pray.
Men who know the Word.
Men who stand shoulder to shoulder in covenant community.
The valley is not your identity.
It is the place where God proves that death never has the final word.
So rise.
The Word has been spoken.
The breath of God is moving.
Stand to your feet.
