Obedience and Discipline Are Not the Same Thing
Obedience is responding to what God has commanded
Discipline is choosing practices that train the man
They overlap—but they are not interchangeable.
A man can be highly disciplined and still disobedient.
A man can be obedient in moments and still undisciplined.
Biblical masculinity requires both, in the right order.
“To obey is better than sacrifice.”
1st Samuel 15:22
Saul was disciplined enough to offer sacrifices.
He was disobedient enough to redefine God’s command.
That tension still exposes men today.
Fasting Is Obedience
Not a Self-Selected Upgrade
Scripture never presents fasting as a productivity hack or a digital detox.
Fasting is:
commanded
assumed
spiritually directed...
“When you fast…”
Matthew 6:16
Not if. When.
Yeshua assumes fasting is part of covenant life.
It is submission of appetite, not convenience.
Biblical fasting is:
abstaining from food
humbling the soul
seeking God’s face
aligning with repentance, prayer, and dependence....
“I humbled my soul with fasting.”
Psalm 35:13
No food.
No substitutes.
No rebranding.
Cutting social media may sharpen focus.
Fasting humbles the flesh.
Those are not the same war.
Discipline Without Obedience Is Still Flesh-Led
Here’s where men get tripped up.
Men love:
cold plunges
dopamine fasts
digital minimalism
productivity systems...
All fine. Some helpful. None commanded.
Paul nails this tension:
“These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in self-made religion, asceticism, and severity to the body—but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.”
Colossians 2:23
Self-made discipline feels holy. God-commanded obedience forms holiness.
A man can quit Instagram and still refuse God’s voice.
A man can skip carbs and still avoid repentance.
A man can train daily and never bow.
That’s not masculinity—that’s control.
Discipline Is a Tool.
Obedience Is a Posture.
Biblically, discipline serves obedience—not the other way around.
“Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.”
1 Timothy 4:7
Discipline has a telos (goal): godliness, not self-mastery alone.
The Bible gives us clarity here.
Israel was disciplined in the wilderness—
but they were judged for disobedience, not lack of routines.
“Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
Deuteronomy 8:3
Fasting removes bread.
Obedience restores hearing.
Masculinity Isn’t Optimisation — It’s Alignment
Modern masculinity asks:
“What makes me sharper?”
Biblical masculinity asks:
“What has God spoken?”
That’s the difference.
God doesn’t need optimized men.
He wants submitted men.
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
John 14:15
Not invent better ones. Not replace them. Not upgrade them.
Keep them.
I'll finish with this...
●Don’t confuse discipline with obedience
●Don’t replace God’s commands with personal preferences
●Don’t downgrade fasting into a lifestyle tweak
●Don’t call self-control righteousness if it never bends the knee...
Discipline trains the body.
Obedience trains the soul.
A disciplined man can still be proud.
An obedient man must be humble.
And humility is the true mark of strength in the Kingdom.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8
That’s not optimized masculinity.
That’s covenant masculinity.
