Eden, and the War of Focus...
The War Started With Focus.
Men think the fall began with rebellion.
In many ways, it began with redirected attention.
The serpent did not arrive in Eden with a sword.
He arrived with an alternative..
Not: “Reject God.”
But: “Look over here.”
That is still how the enemy of our soul works today.
The enemy understands something many men do not:
whatever captures your gaze eventually shapes your appetite.
Let that rest before reading on...
And appetite unchecked becomes bondage.
That is why Psalm 23 is not soft comfort poetry for funerals.
It is a war song against the spirit that destroyed Eden.
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”
David is making a declaration:
“I will not live from lack.”
“I will not live from obsession.”
“I will not live staring at the one tree I do not possess while ignoring the entire garden God already gave me.”
The battle for a man’s gaze.
1. Eden Was Full of Blessing — But Man Focused on Restriction
Genesis 2:16–17
God tells Adam:
“You may freely eat of every tree of the garden…”
Notice the generosity first.
God begins with abundance.
●Every tree.
●Every river.
●Every creature.
○Authority.
○Purpose.
○Presence.
Adam lacked nothing.
Yet the serpent redirected focus from:
“Look at all God has given…”
to:
“Look at the one thing withheld.”
That is the ancient warfare...
The enemy specializes in making abundance feel insufficient.
The Spirit of Leviathan, Twisting Truth...
In Scripture, leviathan represents twisting.
Not always outright lies.
Distortion.
Bending perspective.
The serpent twisted Eve’s focus until:
blessing became background noise,
restriction became obsession,
provision felt like deprivation.
Men still fall this way today.
A man can have:
a good wife,
healthy children,
strength,
brothers,
purpose,
a roof over his head,
the Word of God,
the presence of God…
…and still become consumed by:
the promotion he does not have,
the body he wishes he had,
the money he lacks,
the woman he should not pursue,
the offense he cannot release,
the approval he cannot get.
The enemy only needs one forbidden tree to dominate your attention.
Because fixation blinds men to inheritance.
2. Psalm 23
Is the Restoration of Eden Thinking
Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”
David is undoing Eden’s mindset.
The Hebrew idea is deeper than:
“I have nice things.”
It means:
“I lack nothing necessary.”
“I am not deficient in Him.”
The serpent says:
“You are missing something.”
The Shepherd says:
“You already have Me.”
That changes everything.
The Difference Between Ambition and Covetousness...
This is important for men.
Biblical contentment is not passivity.
David killed giants.
Built kingdoms.
Fought wars.
But he did not strive from emptiness.
Modern culture teaches:
“I achieve, therefore I matter.”
Psalm 23 teaches:
“He leads me.”
That means:
the Shepherd determines pace,
the Shepherd determines provision,
the Shepherd determines direction,
the Shepherd determines timing.
A man led by God is different from a man driven by insecurity.
One walks in purpose.
The other is chased by hunger.
3. The Enemy Targets Your Eyes First
The war has always been about vision.
Eve “Saw”
Genesis says:
“The woman saw that the tree was good…”
The eyes were captured before the hand reached.
Sin usually begins in fixation long before manifestation.
That is why men must guard their gaze.
Not only physically.
Spiritually.
Because what you continually stare at eventually trains your desires.
Peter Walking on Water
Peter walked above chaos while his eyes remained on Christ.
The moment his gaze shifted to the storm he sank.
The storm did not change..
His focus did!
Many men are drowning not because God failed… but because their focus shifted.
They stare more at:
culture,
fear,
lack,
comparison,
lust,
politics,
outrage,
than they do at the Shepherd.
Whatever fills your vision eventually governs your spirit.
4. Men Lose Peace When They Forget What They Already Have!
David says:
“He makes me lie down in green pastures.”
Sheep only rest when they trust the shepherd.
Many modern men cannot rest because they are trapped in constant comparison.
Social media has become a digital forbidden tree.
Constantly showing men:
what they do not own,
where they are not,
what they have not achieved,
who they are not.
And comparison destroys gratitude.
A grateful man walks steady.
A covetous man becomes unstable.
Israel in the Wilderness
Israel saw miracles daily:
manna,
fire,
cloud,
deliverance.
Yet they obsessed over what they did not have.
And eventually they romanticized Egypt.
That is insanity.
But men still do it.
When gratitude dies, bondage starts looking attractive again.
5. The Shepherd Is the Answer to the Serpent
The serpent says:
“God is withholding from you.”
The Shepherd says:
“I lead you beside still waters.”
The serpent says:
“Take for yourself.”
The Shepherd says:
“Trust Me.”
The serpent produces striving.
The Shepherd produces peace.
And notice:
Psalm 23 does not say there are no valleys.
It says:
“You are with me.”
That is the difference.
Biblical masculinity is not the absence of battle.
It is the presence of the Shepherd in battle.
David understood: the true provision was not the pasture.
It was the Presence.
That is maturity.
Immature men seek gifts.
Mature men seek the Giver.
6. Application
The Modern Forbidden Trees
Every generation has forbidden trees.
Things men obsess over believing, “If I had that, then I would finally be fulfilled.”
For some men it is:
money,
status,
women,
power,
validation,
success,
platforms,
influence,
revenge.
But here is the truth:
Adam reached for the one thing withheld… and lost peace in the process.
David rested in the Shepherd… and feared no lack.
Two gazes. Two outcomes.
So what currently dominates your focus more than God?
What are you staring at so long that it is reshaping your appetite?
What blessing have you become blind to because familiarity replaced gratitude?
Are you living led… or driven?
Because there is a difference.
The Real Battle
The battle is not merely for your actions.
It is for your attention.
The enemy rarely needs to remove God entirely from a man’s life.
He only needs to redirect his gaze long enough.
Long enough for gratitude to die.
Long enough for comparison to grow.
Long enough for desire to overrule trust.
But David gives us the antidote:
“The Lord is my Shepherd…”
Not culture.
Not ambition.
Not ego.
Not appetite.
The Shepherd.
And if the Shepherd truly leads you, then you can stand in the middle of uncertainty and still declare:
“I shall not want.”
Because a man who knows the Shepherd does not live from lack.
He lives from inheritance.
