Samuel’s Story and
Our Call Out of Spiritual Slumber
Let's spend some time in a well known biblical story & see if we can glean some new insight for instruction and application...
I want to throw out some thoughts and see how they inspire, if these read differently it's planned, I don't want flow I want you to pause and seek spiritual insight...
1. Living in the Temple… but Asleep
Samuel wasn’t an outsider. The boy lived in the tabernacle
1 Sam. 3:1–3
He was surrounded by the rituals, the leaders, the language of God’s house—yet Scripture says:
“Samuel did not yet know the LORD; the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.”
1 Samuel 3:7
That line hits like a brick.
You can sleep every night in the presence of God and still not know His voice.
Modern men?
Same deal.
We’ve sat in pews.
We’ve sung the songs.
We’ve logged the hours.
But familiarity is not intimacy, and exposure isn’t obedience.
Some men have grown up under Eli’s roof… but not under Yahweh’s rule.
Comfort ≠ Calling.
2. The Call Comes in the Night
Three times Yahweh calls Samuel
1 Sam. 3:4–9
Three times the boy mistakes God’s voice for Eli’s.
Why?
Because spiritual immaturity always misidentifies the Caller.
Modern men hear God stirring their spirit:
●a dream
●a conviction
●a crisis
●a holy agitation
but instead of answering Him…
they run back to whatever
“Eli” gives them comfort.
For some men, “Eli” is:
●routine
●religion without repentance
●work
●entertainment
●busyness
●people-pleasing
●compliance
Like Samuel, they wake up for a second…
feel the nudge…
and crawl right back into comfort.
3. The Lamp of God Had Not Yet Gone Out
1 Sam. 3:3 drops a detail that feels tiny but is massive:
“The lamp of God had not yet gone out.”
In Hebrew thought, that lamp symbolized:
●God’s presence
●God’s mercy
●God’s invitation
Meaning:
Even in a spiritually compromised generation (Eli’s sons were a disaster),
God’s flame was still burning.
Men need to hear this:
Even if they’re half-asleep, compromised, inconsistent, or spiritually dull…
the lamp hasn’t gone out. There’s still time to wake up.
4. The Need for a Spiritual Father Who Isn’t Asleep
Eli may have been spiritually dull, but he still had enough priestly residue to say:
“Go and lie down; if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.’”
1Samuel 3:9
Samuel needed guidance to recognize the voice of God.
So do modern men.
Men don’t just drift into maturity.
They need:
●mentors
●brothers
●spiritual fathers
●accountability
●community (Stone 5 Cavetime)
someone to say, “That’s God. Go answer Him.”
Lone-wolf Christianity produces sleeping prophets.
5. The Awakening Produces a Man Who Never Misses God’s Word Again
After Samuel wakes up to God’s voice, Scripture says something powerful:
“The LORD was with Samuel… and let none of his words fall to the ground.”
1 Samuel 3:19
Once Samuel learned the voice, he obeyed the voice.
And once he obeyed it, he became a man others listened to.
Awakened men become trustworthy men.
Men who carry weight.
Men who shape nations.
This is what we need for Cavetime men:
Not guys who nap in the temple,
but men who stand in the dark, ears open, ready to say:
“Speak, Lord—I’m done hitting snooze.”
This isn't a biblical teaching scraped from the remnants of a Sunday school story but a teaching anchored in biblical truth...
Romans 13:11–12
“The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber… The night is far gone; the day is at hand.”
Ephesians 5:14
“Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Proverbs 8:34
“Blessed is the man who listens to Me, watching daily at My gates.”
Hebrews 5:12–14
Immature believers stuck on milk can’t discern God’s voice.
Mature men train their senses to recognize Him.
Isaiah 50:4
“He awakens me morning by morning… to listen like one being instructed.”
6. The Call to the Men of Cavetime
Here’s the punchline for the men:
Stop sleeping in sacred places.
You’ve been close to the things of God—
now get close to the God of those things.
Recognize the call.
Stop mistaking God’s voice for your own thoughts or someone else’s.
Quit running back to Eli’s bed.
Your comfort is killing your calling.
Answer the voice.
“Speak, Lord—your servant is ready.”
Become the man who never again allows God’s words to fall to the ground.
