“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself…”
Luke 9:23
So what exactly is “himself”?
In English, “deny himself” sounds vague — like Jesus is asking us to be less “us,” to erase personality or individuality.
Absolutely not.
That’s never been the heart of God.
Let’s break it apart, dissect with the blade of truth, the Word of God...
1. The Original Language — Greek (Koine)
The key word:
ἀρνησάσθω ἑαυτόν
arnēsasthō heauton
“Let him deny himself.”
ἀρνέομαι (arneomai) means:
to refuse,
to reject,
to disown,
to renounce all claim over.
This is covenant language.
In Greek contracts, arneomai meant cutting off rights or ownership to something — like disowning an inheritance or severing legal ties.
ἑαυτόν (heauton)
This means “himself”
but not the God-given identity or personality.
It means the self that asserts ownership, the unsubmitted will, the flesh-directed autonomy.
So Jesus isn’t saying:
“Erase your personality.”
He’s saying:
“Kill the part of you that still tries to be its own king.”
2. The Ancient Jewish Mindset
Jesus isn’t talking to Greeks first;
He’s talking to Hebrews.
For a Jew, “self” wasn’t personality it was:
nefesh = life-breath, appetite, desires Genesis 2:7
the seat of will and decision
the part of a man that says
"I want, I choose, I decide.”
This is the part of man the serpent targeted in Eden.
The self Jesus points at is the same self Adam elevated above God’s word.
3. So what is Jesus commanding?
He is NOT telling you to deny:
●your masculinity
●your individuality
●your giftings
●your calling
●your God-designed personality
●your purpose
God handcrafted those.
He doesn’t ask you to burn what He forged.
He IS telling you to deny:
your rebellious independence
●your self-rule
●your ego
●the fleshly impulses that demand the throne
●the “I know better” voice
●the life you build apart from Him
●the Adamic self that resists obedience
This aligns fully with Paul’s words:
“I have been crucified with Christ.
It is no longer I who live…”
Galatians 2:20
Which “I”?
Not Paul’s identity his old mastery, his old authority, his old lordship over his own story.
4. Why does Jesus require this?
Because following Him means returning to original design:
Sons who walk under the Father’s authority.
Jesus is restoring the Eden order:
God as King
Man as image-bearer
Dominion under God — not outside Him
The “self” that must be denied is everything resisting that arrangement.
5. Where does this happen?
Jesus says it’s not a one-time act:
“let him deny himself daily…”
Luke 9:23
●Daily cross.
●Daily surrender.
●Daily alignment.
●Daily execution of the old self.
The cross wasn’t an ornament — it was an execution stake.
Jesus is blunt:
“Kill what doesn’t belong to My Kingdom.”
6. When does this apply?
Every moment of tension between:
God’s Word
and your will
Every time:
conviction hits, flesh rises, comfort calls, pride whispers,
fear holds you back,
obedience costs you.
This is the battlefield where “self” is denied.
7. Who is Jesus calling out?
“If anyone…”
Men who want to:
●follow,
●lead,
●rule their homes well,
●shape their sons,
●build on the Rock,
●walk in Kingdom authority.
●Not tourists.
●Not spectators.
●Not religious talkers.
Followers. Apprentices. Disciples. Warriors. Sons.
So what is “himself”?
Let’s say it plain:
**It’s the uncrucified man within the man.
The Adamic impulse.
The old king trying to keep his throne.
The self-rule that refuses to bow.
The flesh-driven, pride-fueled, fear-led version of you.**
Jesus is not stripping your identity.
He is stripping the false identity you built without Him.
He is not killing the man.
He is killing the imposter.
